MICHEL – THE ANIMALS I AM is a further development of the solo work created in 2021 by Chiara Bersani. In it, she engages with the codes of classical ballet and transposes them onto a body that exists beyond normative conceptions.

Bersani, who lives with brittle bone disease, thus opens up new perspectives on
movement, virtuosity, and presence. In 2025, the work evolved into a choral version for three performers with different physical conditions. Together, they challenge the notion that disabled artists are singular exceptions. Inspired by Michel Petrucciani, the early deceased jazz pianist with the same genetic condition who was often celebrated as a genius, the piece shifts established perspectives on the body in dance and reflects on its aesthetic
and political dimensions.
