After many years of political work, the time has come: for the first time, the long struggle to rename colonial street names has been successful. Two colonial street names in Hamburg have been removed and replaced with the names of Louisa Kamana of the OvaHerero and Cornelius Fredericks of the !Aman. Both are important figures in the resistance against German colonial rule in Namibia and today stand for courage, remembrance and the fight for justice.
The Hamburg Postcolonial Working Group has been campaigning for this renaming since 2016. The AK Hamburg Postkolonial makes colonial traces in urban space visible and calls for a change of perspective in dealing with German colonial history. And now there is finally a reason to celebrate!
Together with activists from Namibia and the USA, AK Hamburg Postkolonial invites you to a diverse programme: On Saturday afternoon, Kampnagel will host a panel discussion on the history of genocide in Namibia and the long struggle for recognition. Guests include Ida Hoffmann (Nama Genocide Technical Committee, Namibia) and Kavemuii Murangi (OvaHerero/Mbanderu and Nama Genocides Institute, USA). Both have been instrumental in campaigning for the renaming and coordinating the name proposals among the descendants' organisations. The discussion will be moderated by Anke Schwarzer (AK Hamburg Postkolonial).
On Sunday, the grand renaming celebration will take place at St. Mary's Church in Ohlsdorf (starting at 1 p.m. in the parish hall of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ohlsdorf-Fuhlsbüttel, Am Hasenberge 44). You can expect Afro-vegan fusion cuisine, performances, music, film, and a neighborhood tour with an information panel that will permanently anchor the stories of Louisa Kamana and Cornelius Fredericks in the city.
