In cooperation with the Körber Foundation, who encourages digital responsibility, we equip you for the recapturing of your autonomy in the digitalized present with workshops, lectures and performances on subversive strategies and the basics you need for digital self-empowerment.

Program Wednesday, august 17th

17:00 - 18:00 (Halle KX) Digital Refugee Day Code for Hamburg will talk with organizations and refugees, how digital products (like apps) could help to improve the coordination of donations and working time and the communication between refugees and volunteers. Program Friday, August 19th

15:00 - 20:00 Makersday - Handybau Workshop (Halle KX) Fab Labs are open workshops in which non-experts get to access modern production resources, like 3-D printers, laser cutters and milling machines. Regular people go from being consumers to being producers who are independent of the market. In the cell-phone construction workshop in the temporary Fab Lab at the Summer Festival, participants will produce functional cell phone under professional guidance.

11:30 - 12:30 (Halle P1) Die digitale Stadt gehört uns allen To whom do the massive amounts of data that accrue in a city like Hamburg every day belong? What would happen if we could all use them – not just the authorities and tech companies? This panel examines the possibilities, and discusses which technological know-how and skills we would need for them. A glimpse at Hamburg’s digital future.

12:30 - 14:00 (Halle P1, in englischer Sprache) Adam Harvey American artist Adam Harvey will talk about the growing importance of digital facial recognition techniques, and demonstrate practical options for maintaining control over your own images. His CV Dazzle project, centered on software-powered makeup techniques, allows people to, for example, deceive digital automated facial recognition and at the same time look like the hipster of the future. Harvey is also a participating artist in the Project A/D/A.

14:30 - 15:15 (Halle KX) Freifunk Freifunk, or free radio, refers to the merging of self-run local computer networks with the goal of enabling free and anonymous communication via digital data networks without the use of commercial hotspots. This workshop is an introduction to the principle of Freifunk and includes initial instructions for participation. In Cooperation with hamburg.freifunk.net

15:30 - 16:30 (Halle P1) Lizvlx (Ubermorgen) Lizvlx is part of the Swiss-Austrian-American media-art duo Ubermorgen who create spectacular actions by taking advantage of hacking’s artistic possibilities. At the Summerfestival, Lizvlx talks about Under the name »Google will eat itself,« for example, they’ve used automated income from Google’s advertising program to buy Google stock.

16:30 - 18:00 (Halle KX) Code for Hamburg Many communities now post their municipal-council and administration data online. This workshop introduces the various ways in which this open data can be used to contribute to the transparency of political decision-making and how it can be used to strengthen democratic participation. 18:00 - 19:30 (Halle P1) Aram Bartholl: Transparency Aram Bartholl is a conceptual and media artist. His central interest is the critical analysis of the increasing digitalization of our daily lives. In his often humor-filled works, he transfers items from the online into the analog world, thus, for example, making visible the ubiquity of Internet companies like Google. In his performative workshop, TRANSPARENCY, he demonstrates which digital traces are created when we use smartphones, and which options we have for hiding them.

12:00 – 18:00 (Halle P1) Feminist Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon The online encyclopedia Wikipedia has now become one of the Internet’s most important sources of knowledge. Theoretically, everybody can contribute to it, but research has shown that only approximately 13 percent of ist authors are women, thus perpetuating the existing gender imbalance. At the Feminist Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, participants receive a simple introduction to the fundamentals of Wikipedia, and a tutorial for editing, allowing participants to modify or create articles about the subject digital activism. 10:00 - 14:00 (Halle KX) Programmieren für alle ab 8 Jahren In this workshop, youths between the ages of 8 and 14 can playfully try out the possibilities offered by computers. How does programming work? How do I build a robot? How can I make things move using electronics? How do I develop my own computer game? Previous experience is helpful, but not necessary. 16:00 - 18:00 (Halle KX) Cryptoparty für Frauen Ever since various intelligence services’ spying programs have been revealed, at the latest, we’ve known that all digital communication can be registered, evaluated and stored. At a cryptoparty, the basic techniques for digital self-defense are taught: data-encryption and secure communication. Afterwards, participants are themselves able to pass on this knowledge.
