Singers Wanted for the Performance »SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE«

For the stage production SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE by singer-songwriter Safia Nolin and director Philippe Cyr, we are looking for 13 singers to join the stage chorus for the performances at Kampnagel in December 2026.

In SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE, Safia Nolin and Philippe Cyr transform thousands of hateful comments directed at Safia Nolin online into a powerful musical performance. At the center is Safia Nolin herself. Facing her is a large chorus that confronts her with the collected words of digital hate. The piece explores the mechanisms of public condemnation and the violence of language while also asking what freedom of speech means when it turns into hate and violence. Yet the balance of power does not remain the same: carried by music and the power of community, the chorus, which initially embodies the voice of the attack, becomes a source of solidarity and self-empowerment. What begins as a public attack ends with the reclaiming of voice, visibility, and space. SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE is a powerful examination of digital hate and public violence and at the same time, a tribute to the power of art, community, and a collective voice.

Here you’ll find a trailer for the piece.

Who are we looking for?

We want to put together a choir that is as diverse as possible and welcome applications from people of all ages, genders, cultural backgrounds, and physical appearances. At the same time, we aim for a balanced distribution across the four voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.

The working languages are German and English, and the position is paid.

You should apply if you:

  • Can read sheet music and feel confident singing complex harmonies
  • Can read and sing in French
  • Can commit to approximately 3.5 hours of rehearsal plus 2 hours of personal preparation per week during the rehearsal period,
  • Are eager for an intensive artistic collaboration and an extraordinary stage production.
  • Can be present for the intensive rehearsal period from December 6 to 9, 2026, with the team from Montreal
  • Can be present for all performances on December 9–11, 2026, at Kampnagel

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will take place in Hamburg from October through December. Weekly rehearsals are planned, with the exact dates to be determined in consultation with the group.

Application

The application process consists of two selection rounds. Participation in the first round does not automatically lead to an invitation to the second round.

Please apply by September 15 with a one-minute video. In the video, please briefly introduce yourself and then sing a passage from the piece “Bloc Insulte,” measures 1–9. You can find the corresponding page of the score, the audio file, and an information sheet here: Link to the folder

After reviewing all applications, a shortlist will be selected. Applicants selected for the second round will receive an invitation to a group rehearsal on September 21, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Hamburg. During this rehearsal, we’d like to get to know you as a group and work together musically. Based on the group rehearsal, the 13 singers for the stage chorus will then be selected.

We look forward to receiving your applications by September 15 at: Chor@Kampnagel.de
