Ariel Efraim Ashbel and Friends
The Empire Strikes Back: Kingdom of the Synthetic
Past dates
The ‘enfant terrible’ of the Israeli performance scene is back! In 2014, Ariel Efraim Ashbel came to Kampnagel to present his hit piece, ALL WHITE PEOPLE LOOK THE SAME TO ME, in which he exposed the performance invention of the ‘others’, their colonial past and their legacy. In THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK he is now trying to reclaim the future. To do this, Ashbel sends his ensemble of dancers, performers, musicians, scientists, artefacts and robots to the future, to resume his visual research into race, identity and cultural rule : What new types of embodied subjectivity are possible when the concept of race has become obsolete? Which superhuman physicalities can develop beyond the body? In an exuberant, hybrid revue Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends conquer the tyranny of the subject, expose the violent legacy of ‘humanism’ and explain the identity politics of war.
