Visual artist Daniel Lie is part of Sao Paulo’s innovative art scene. His cybernetic installations, created with minerals, plants and rotting fruit, produce atmospherically dense scenarios, in which seasonal linearity is dissolved in favour of procedural understanding. A queer space, ruled by alternative laws. As a neo tropical researcher, he uses his installations to create experiential spaces, producing archaic sensuality. For PROJETO BRASIL – TROPICALYPSE NOW! Daniel Lie will build a space connecting sculpture, in which discourse, music and art come together in a dialogue. Daniel Lie’s work is firmly rooted in the Brazilian tradition of anthropophagy, which is not only an aesthetic movement, but also a cosmopolitan philosophy in South America. The socially critical and culturally revolutionary movement is partly based on Oswald de Andrade’s 1928 anthropophagy manifesto. Instead of rejecting a dominant European culture, it requests the incorporation – or, to stay within the imagery of anthropophagy, i.e. cannibalism, the ‘devouring’ – of European styles, in order to use certain elements and then develop a unique self-confident culture. PODRERA is the centre of the festival, a space for events and networking. And it’s very, very beautiful!!
