As vice chancellor, finance minister, and SPD party leader, Lars Klingbeil is shaping German politics and its enormous challenges. Between a strong welfare state and spiraling debt, he wants to give the “autumn of reforms” a social democratic touch. Despite opposition from his coalition partner, the goal is to close the budget gap, which runs into the billions, even if it means burdening top earners. At the same time, in view of a world marked by multiple crises, he wants to invest in deterrence and defense capabilities – against fierce resistance from within his own ranks.
How can social democracy win back the working class, which votes disproportionately for the AfD? What do rearmament and conscription mean for the SPD as a “force for peace in Germany and Europe”? And how does the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition plan to instill confidence in the population despite widespread dissatisfaction with its government work?
Tina Hildebrandt, head of the politics department at DIE ZEIT, and Roman Pletter, head of the economics department at DIE ZEIT, will discuss these and other questions with Lars Klingbeil. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
An event of DIE ZEIT.
