In their residency, Enting Zhang and Kevin Claudio Ponge Kassoma explore the expressive power and multifaceted nature of waacking, a dance style that is deeply rooted in queer subculture and challenges stereotypes. With INTO THE UNKNOWN, the artists want to make the essential, style-defining foundations of waacking visible and at the same time play with and break up gender-assigning energies in dance and body perception. In doing so, they also focus their attention on the core values of the style’s development and question which characters and the associated emotions should and may be expressed by today’s generation. INTO THE UNKNOWN opens up a space in which themes such as identity and cultural affiliation can be negotiated.
