FESTIVAL LECTURES

Working with Kampnagel, Tunisian dance theorist and dramaturg Mariem Guellouz has put together a lecture programme that reflects the theory behind the themes of the festival and asks fundamental questions about post-colonialism, critically scrutinises the term ‘contemporary’ and delivers the latest findings on Afro-futurism.

GRADA KILOMBA, PORTUGAL

DECOLONIZING KNOWLEDGE

In her lecture performance, Portugese author, theorist and interdisciplinary artist, Grada Kilomba reveals the power of classic knowledge production and asks: What is recognised as knowledge? Which knowledge is that? Who should actually produce it? Kilomba touches on this colonial wound, by opening up a hybrid space in which the borders between academic and artistic language are blurred and the structures of knowledge and power are transformed. With the help of texts, visual art and performative stories as forms of alternative knowledge production, she explores the possibility of decolonialised knowledge.

JEAN-LOUP AMSELLE, FRANCE

CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART: ART OF ORIGINS?

In his research, French anthropologist Jean-Loup Amselle examines modern African art from the perspective of multi-culturalism and post-colonialism. In his lecture he discusses how the post-colonial view of African art alone is reducing the heritage and draws connecting lines to the concept of primitivism.

KAPWANI KIWANGA, CANADA

AFROGALACTICA

As an anthropologist from the future, Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga looks back at the founding of the United States from Africa and the dispatch of ‘Afronauts’ into space through the African space agencies. In her lecture performance AFROGALACTICA, she immerses herself in the past in order to delve into the lost archives of pop culture, and mixes up the dominant narrative by interweaving truth and fiction. Her resources: science-fiction, all kinds of archives, Afrofuturism and anti-colonialism.
