Searching for William

A very violent Shakespeare evening takes place on the Kampnagel stage. Shakespeare with punk, with fog, light and boom, Shakespeare with heart, tenderness and seriousness, Shakespeare in the rich sound of his incomparable speech music and in the compositions of Woods of Birnam.

A furious theatre concert with actor Christian Friedel at its centre. On this evening, the texts belong to him; he brings them to share with the audience, he lets them spread out in the hall, with a force and changeability that takes your breath away. His source of inspiration: the work of probably the greatest poet in human history. Friedel deals above all with the texts from "Hamlet" and "Macbeth". He does not monologue, he lives and animates the texts, changes through the roles and moods and allows kings and ghosts, witches and fools, perpetrators and victims to emerge. Friedel the actor is at the same time Friedel the singer and musician. His band Woods of Birnam (the name goes back to a line from Macbeth and testifies to the band members' enthusiasm for Shakespeare) creates a sound space within the stage space, a stage set that the ears see. Enthusiasm where Friedel and Woods of Birnam trace Shakespeare's genius.
