Double Bind
A research-based performance by a Berlin-based artist on cognitive dissonance, at the MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum – Kulturen und Künste der Welt.
With works exploring virality and performativity, Berlin-based artist Cem A. - creator of the meme page @freeze_magazine - has gained international recognition, with presentations at documenta fifteen, Mudam Luxembourg, and Barbican Centre, among others. In DOUBLE BIND, his latest performative discourse format, he renders the mechanisms of cognitive dissonance visible through performance, anthropological research, and data-driven visualization. Two experts from different disciplines speak in turns on a shared topic - such as a firefighter and a banker on risk - without being able to hear one another. As the audience follows them, their language and lines of thought are analyzed in real time. Live visualizations reveal where terms overlap or meanings diverge. What emerges is not a dialogue but a coexistence of knowledge systems, exposing how different backgrounds not only describe the world but actively produce it. The MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum – Kulturen und Künste der Welt becomes a discursive space where difference is not resolved, but made legible.
