‘Everything becomes a hole’, that’s how Beatriz Preciado once described the deconstruction of gender and the liberation of the phallus. And now, with MACAQUINHOS (little monkeys) nine performers from a Brazilian artists assembly are going even further, positioning their own bodies across the North-South divide. The anus as a physical metaphor for the south, socially delegitimised and ostracised, subservient to the normative North through colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy. MACAQUINHOS scrutinises knowledge production, interpretation and last but not least the social construction of bodies and art. No other performance has ever garnered such a ferocious reaction in Brazil, and it’s no wonder, as it completely clears away clichés such as the much-praised freedom of movement and the sensual physicality of Brazilian people. In the performance, removing any taboos around the body is something that is taken literally and implemented through choreography. In short: it’s about the anus. The most democratic and taboo orifice ever. The performance is a homage to beauty and freedom, far removed from an industrial porno aesthetic.
