More effective than any energy drink: TO DA BONE features cracked dance dynamics with an Instagram aesthetic.
Jumpstyle is a high-energy form of dance and music that began in the suburbs of Belgium and the Netherlands in the aughts (much like gabber before it), and then spread internationally over the Internet. Youths posted half-minute long clips of spectacular jump-choreographies to hard electro beats, expressing their suburban frustration with masterly bursts of energy. As a result, communities emerged through social media whose members met for virtual as well as offline jumpstyle battles. The trio (LA)HORDE, a young media-art collective that works with choreography, video and installation at the inflection point between the online and offline worlds, has cast 11 jumpers from nine countries via the internet in order to turn the original solo dances into an ensemble choreography for the big stage. The French collective thus manages to create a great contemporary dance form out of jumpstyle’s raw energy and virtuosity without neglecting its rebellious backstory, and the individuality and community background of its digital natives. TO DA BONE is a pulsing, intoxicating dance evening – highly aestheticized and Instagram-compatible – that shows how much power and art come out of today’s youth cultures.
