Grand dance! With pieces by Osnel Delgado, Aszure Barton and Cecilia Bengolea and live music by Grammy Award-winner Arturo O’Farrill, the Malpaso Dance Company sweeps the dust from the dance floor.

Hardly any other country has been home to such technically and stylistically versatile dancers as Cuba: Its 20th-century choreographers, like Alberto Alonso, reconceived European ballet, incorporating influences from American modern dance and integrating Afro-Cuban styles to create a specifically Cuban dance language. Malpaso Dance Company, founded in 2012, has devoted itself to the future of Cuban dance: With world renowned guest choreographers and original productions by co-founder Osnel Delgado, former dancer of the legendary company Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Malpaso has built up a contemporary repertory which the company is showcasing on the big stages of North- and South America. Now the company is coming to Europe for the first time with three different pieces in one evening: INDOMITABLE WALTZ (with music by Nils Frahm among others), choreographed by Aszure Barton, who has rejuvenated ballet internationally with her works for, among others, the Milan Scala and the Bavarian State Ballet; Osnel Delgado’s 24 HOURS AND A DOG, inspired by a day in Havana and with live music by six-time Grammy-winning Arturo O’Farrill and his ensemble (who will also make his Elbphilharmonie debut on August 12th in the context of the International Summer Festival); and – as a Summer Festival commission – the world premiere of LIQUIDOTOPIE by the dazzling choreographer Cecilia Bengolea, who moves nonchalantly between ballet and pop culture.
