A dada spectacle for young rebels, ages six and up, with a gum-chewing denture, ping-pong rules and a paintflood.
Miet Warlop’s spectacles of color and form – with foam sausages, anthropomorphic balls of wool and burbling paint fountains – have been hugely popular at previous International Summer Festivals. Now, for the first time ever, the Belgian has adapted her form of action-theater, inspired by visual art, for a younger audience. BIG BEARS CRY TOO is an approximately 45-minute stage happening including scenes in which an oversize teddy bear explodes, third eyes float through the room and the stage is flooded with paint. This wonderfully crazy object-theater turns the laws and assumptions of the stage upside down, and is a cry for creative recklessness, humor in art and having a big heart. The fact that big bears need to cry too isn’t just an insight that will unburden people above the ages of six, but older visitors who sometimes need to be reminded that they aren’t totally alone in this big, confusing universe – and that art can be a central part of life.
