In 2010, the French construction materials group Lafarge opens a cement factory in Syria – one of the largest foreign investments in the country. A short time later, Syria experiences a brutal civil and proxy war. The management makes deals with the factions warring over control of the region where the factory is situated. In four biographies – partly fictional, partly based on fact – of a journalist, the son of a general, a businessman and a factory worker, the playwright Mohammad Al Attar and his Syrian compatriot, the director Omar Abussada, dissect the history of the factory – and with it the power relations that have determined the course of the conflict in Syria.
