A live radio play in Cotonou and Hamburg about storytelling as critical artistic practice.
The Hamburg artist collective Pool has been addressing the often uncomfortable conditions of art’s geographic localization and thus building bridges over long distances and state borders since 2015. In XO’DOALLÔKAN-NÙ, an audio performance, Pool are joining Katoulati, a group from Cotonou, Benin. The piece intensely examines the rich and vibrant practice of telling stories in Benin. In this country, storytellers are important protagonists in the cultural scene. They orally communicate fairy tales and stories, which are often not fixated in writing, in a performative practice while constantly rewriting and modernizing them. In a call-shop, Pool and Katoulati will stage a live radio play with speakers from both cities; the piece takes place in Cotonou and Hamburg simultaneously, and the Hamburg audience can take part via phone in a shop in St. Georg. In contrast to a traditional guest performance in a theater, XO’DO-ALLÔKAN-NÙ creates a split acoustic space that overcomes the great distance and in which personal, political and commercial narratives meld into a »multilogue« in three languages.
