This mixture of superhero comic, NYC avant-garde and stunt show is a contemporary adrenaline experience for action fans of all ages.
Elizabeth Streb’s unconventional reconceptualization of American postmodern dance is an avant-garde combination of stunt show, extreme sport and artistry. The New York dancer studied ballet and learned from Cunningham dancer Viola Farber, and was around artistic circles associated with dance pioneer Trisha Brown and the legendary Judson Dance Theater. Over the years, she has developed an extreme form of dance that scares orthopedists and brings fun to everyone else: the »extreme action heroes«, as the performers call themselves, belly flop off platforms and moving surfaces in brightly colored overalls, or try to find out how many people they can simultaneously fit into an aquarium. The principles of contemporary choreography are expanded into all dimensions with an almost scientific interest in the laws of space and time without any apparent fear of physical limits or injury. The action heroes also blur the boundaries of what would normally be considered »high-culture« contemporary dance – and thus provide a perfect big-stage counterpart to Florentina Holzinger’s APOLLON. Streb – who also runs a community space for all ages with her heroes in Brooklyn and was responsible for spectacular performances at landmarks as part of the London Festival for the 2012 Olympic Games – is in Hamburg for the first time with SEA.
