»A woman must have money and a room of her own in order to write«, said Virginia Woolf in her 1929 essay »A Room of One's Own.« Over 90 years later, this allegory of financial and spatial independence is more relevant than ever. As we witness a feminist backlash in the Corona-Pandemic, women* continue to have doors closed, their spaces made smaller and smaller, or taken away altogether.
In an audiovisual adaptation of Woolf's theses, Swoosh Lieu asks what the spaces must look like in which we can emancipate and self-actualize, and what means we must use to narrate and imagine these spaces so that they can actually come into being. The camera moves through the empty theater space on the basis of these questions and in times of lockdown, exploring places and perspectives, visibilities and volumes, accesses and limitations.
