Workshop On Pop Culture, Feminism And Identity

Participants Wanted [15-20 Years]

Hatred against women and all those existing beyond conventional ideas of gender and sexual or romantic orientation is present globally. Social media, magazines and antifeminist statements by celebrities spam especially women with contradicting messages on what they are supposed to be and represent. This workshop will explore this difficult terrain under the lead of London-based choreographer and performance artist THE FAMOUS Lauren Barri Holstein.

As Holstein puts it: "We will learn about contemporary, radical practices in theatre, art and performance that question our understanding of what theatre/performance can be. We will encourage ourselves to explore our bodies as means of both composition and meaning. We will get a clearer idea of how pop culture – pop stars, celebrity culture, social media, YouTube and other things that I’m too old for – has influenced our self-worth and our relation to our own bodies, to origin, race, culture, sex, gender, class, abilities, politics etc. This will be an intense, risky, weird, goofy, inspiring and challenging workshop. Get ready for something strange!"

We aim to create a space in which mainstream feminism can and shall be criticised for its whiteness and for not reflecting on its privilege. Therefore, we particularly encourage those to apply who experience othering and marginalisation in aspects such as origin, race, culture, religion, queerness, gender or disability. We want to enter in exchange with a diverse as possible group.

We want to create a safer space for those who experience misogyny and other forms of discrimination in a heteronormative and binary world. That’s why we specifically invite women and queer people. If you have questions about this or wonder if you’re welcome to apply, feel free to contact presse@kampnagel.de or call +49 (0)40 270 949 19.

Holstein plans on continuing working together with some participants after the workshop. In two rehearsal blocks in March and May 2020, a performance that aims to challenge performers and audience alike will be developed to be shown at Kampnagel. Please note in your application if you are free during those periods. It is also possible to participate in the workshop if you’re not interested in performing.

ORGANISATION AND ACCESS The workshop is free. Drinks and snacks will be provided during the workshop and rehearsal weeks. We can reimburse your public transport tickets. Holstein will be speaking in English, an English-German interpreter will be present. If you’re not sure if your access needs will be met (such as wheelchair accessibility, stimming welcome or sign language interpretation), please get in touch with us. We’ll try to organise everything in a way that will be accessible to you and give you feedback on it.

APPLICATION Please send your application including your name, date of birth, email, phone number, photo, availability during the rehearsal weeks and a short motivation letter (half page) to presse@kampnagel.de by december 1st.
