A touching conversation between a daughter, her dead father and her mother who can no longer remember her lines – as a comedy show.
With her feminist comedy show, MY STORIES, YOUR EMAILS, which she performed at the Summer Festival 2016, former Forced Entertainment performer and globally touring stand-up and live artist, Ursula Martinez, showed us that comedy can be more than shallow mass entertainment. In her latest performance, she revisits her first theatre show from 20 years ago. Appearing on-stage with her Mum and Dad, A FAMILY OUTING was essentially a frank conversation between a daughter and her parents (a British physicist and a Spanish au pair), about family life, covering subjects such as her mother’s migration story, sibling rivalry and the artists’ homosexuality. 20 years later, through a canny interplay with the first production, which is projected throughout, Martinez, now in her 50s, attempts to recreate that show, but without her father who has since passed away, and with her mother who sometimes forgets that she can no longer remember her lines. The result is a bracingly funny as well as honest, moving and ultimately uplifting reflection on the passage of time, family ties, love, responsibility, and memories.
