All Dengler really wants to do is reassure his elderly mother, who thinks she sees shadows on her farm in the Black Forest at night. But then Dengler starts to have doubts: it seems as if there really are figures out and about. The farm belongs to a piece of pastureland on the Feldberg, the ideal location for a wind turbine. But there is resistance to the project in the village. When the spokeswoman for the protesters is murdered, Dengler finds himself confronted with a complicated case. Also in his personal life: the dead woman was his childhood sweetheart.

“Black Forest” is Dengler's eleventh case, and the further he progresses with his investigations, the more clearly a difficult-to-penetrate web of obligations and unscrupulous interests is revealed. Corrupt state politicians, greedy middle-class businessmen and a Russian honorary consul are involved in the case, and the connections reach all the way to the highest spheres of power. And far back into the past.
