Alexei Ratmansky & Hamburg Ballett
Wunderland
Dates
6/20/26
7:30 PM
Alexei Ratmansky, one of the world's most renowned choreographers, creates a world premiere for the Hamburg Ballet based on Lewis Carroll's classics ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’. The adventures of the small, headstrong Alice in a world that follows completely different rules - and thus holds up a mirror to our own - continue to captivate and fascinate us to this day. Is it all just a (nightmare) dream? A parallel universe? A journey into the subconscious? Carroll's literary works offer many possible interpretations. The enchanting and fantastic story is in the best of hands with Ratmansky, resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet and a brilliant storyteller. Committed to classical ballet through and through, he masters the art of weaving classical ballet technique with modern sensibility.
Alexei Ratmansky was born in St. Petersburg. His work is performed by nearly all major ballet companies worldwide, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris, The Royal Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Denmark, the Royal Ballet of Sweden, the Dutch National Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, the Bavarian State Ballet and the Miami City Ballet. He has also choreographed for star dancers such as Nina Ananiashvili, Wendy Whelan, Diana Vishneva, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. From 2004 to 2008, Alexei Ratmansky was the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, which under his leadership was twice named "Best Foreign Company" by the London Critics' Circle. From 2009 to early 2023, Ratmansky was artist-in-residence at American Ballet Theatre. Since August 2023, he has held the same position at New York City Ballet.
