Thematic Focus

Tanztriennale

Dance on stage, in public spaces, as discourse, or in everyday life. The first edition of the Dance Triennial explores the potential of dance – as an art form, as a social force, and as a catalyst for new perspectives. Across cultures, communities, and generations, the Dance Triennial invites dance professionals and the general public to watch, participate, reflect, engage in conversation, and dance!

The Dance Triennial is a new initiative for dance. It is a long-term, recurring event and stands for a clear stance: Dance should be made visible, strengthened, and recognized as a socially relevant practice.

The spectrum of invited artists for the inaugural edition ranges from internationally renowned companies to the local Hamburg dance scene. Furthermore, the Tanztriennale extends into Hamburg’s urban space with artistic interventions and a city parade. The city itself becomes a stage. Throughout the week, events will take place at various locations both during the day and in the evening – Hamburg will become an international hot spot for dance.

As part of the multi-day forum, professional dance practitioners, international delegations, and representatives of various cultural policy networks and organizations from Germany and around the world will come to Hamburg to discuss how dance as an art form can be strengthened and the visibility of artistic diversity increased.

The Tanztriennale is an initiative of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). It is being produced by Tanztriennale Hamburg e.V. and is funded as a cultural beacon by the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, Behörde für Kultur und Medien (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of Culture and Media). The Federal Cultural Foundation is funded by the Beauftragter der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media). Tanztriennale Hamburg e.V. is an association of the Hamburg Ballet/Hamburgische Staatsoper GmbH, Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik GmbH and K3 – Zentrum für Choreographie | Tanzplan Hamburg.
