explore dance - Constantin Trommlitz
Pop up pieces
In an urban dance battle, dancers compete against each other, and the audience or a jury decides the winner. Originally, these battles emerged from gang rivalries, which were resolved through dance instead of violence. In 2024, they became an Olympic competitive discipline for the first time. Battles are unpredictable: the music, floor, space, and opponents are not predetermined. The challenge lies in reacting spontaneously and giving it your all. The goal is to be fully present in the moment and to let music, body, and skills merge into one. Yet it’s about more than just winning - it’s about self-image, potential, self-doubt, originality, and dealing with pressure and defeat. Can I overcome myself and present who I am in front of an audience? How do I transform nervousness into energy? With “Tie Break”, choreographer Constantin Trommlitz and dancers from various styles explore how the body makes emotions visible and how dance battles can serve as a metaphor for personal struggles.
Constantin Trommlitz is a German choreographer, dancer and filmmaker based in Amsterdam and Hamburg. His background in dance lies in Breakdance - an art form he cites as the most significant influence on his work. In 2022, Constantin began creating his own pieces and since then, he moves freely between choreography, dance, and film. The pop-up piece "Tie Break" was created as part of explore dance - Network Dance for Young Audience. The mobile pop-up pieces for children and adolescents of various age groups are presented with minimal technical requirements in schools, museums, galleries, cultural centers, outdoors, as well as in theater spaces, and they tour nationwide and internationally.
