The art historian Bénédicte Savoy opens Kampnagel’s 2019/20 season with a lecture. In 2018, Savoy and the Senegalese economist and author Felwine Sarr were jointly tasked by French President Emmanuel Macron with determining the conditions for France to return African cultural objects to their countries of origin. The process has also enlivened debates in Germany over restitution, decolonisation and the renewal of collective memory – demands that (Afro-German) activists and thinkers have been making for decades.
