Spring 2016. Three artists find a sound. They are all boys, together they are a band. Black Cracker, Hans Unstern and Tucké Royale are: the BOIBAND. Their on-stage alter-egos are larger than life, their theatre performances lie somewhere between autobiography and fictionalisation. Indeed Tucké Royale already has one foot in the promised land. On the way to his new image he passes the swamp of businesses, doctors’ appointments and difficulties – but all the time he would much rather be playing the drums. Here Boy with an ‘I’ stands for the complicating of masculinity as a biological dowry, of being a man as a penis talent. Where the medical-judicial procedure sees human beings socially sealed in transition and put under psychopathological house arrest, BOIBAND celebrates the generous gesture of opening up: our chance for self-determination, the possibility of genuine transformation and the celebration of our vulnerability as empowerment. ‘It’s never too late / to become trans*parent.’
