What if they went to Moscow? Theater & Film nach Tschechows 3 SCHWESTERN
E SE ELAS FOSSEM PARA MOSCOU? Performance and film inspired by Chekhov’s ‘THREE SISTERS’
The title of Christiane Jatahy’s latest piece gets to the heart of her altercation with Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’. What would have happened if Mascha, Irina and Olga had actually made it to Moscow? Would the city have fulfilled their desires? Jatahy takes the gulf between wishes and reality back to its starting point and features recent research, conducted by the Brazilian director in the autumn of 2013. She asked people from different backgrounds and cultures in Paris, Frankfurt and São Paulo about their utopias. Working with three excellent actresses and using the acquired film footage, Chekhov’s text and her own wishful thinking, she has created her own version of the sisters. The theatre performance is simultaneously a film shoot: the technical equipment creates part of the stage scenery, the live musicians deliver the soundtrack and the audience’s reactions are incorporated into the story. So each performance creates a new film, which will be screened simultaneously in the neighbouring room. The result is a hybrid complete artwork, which blurs the lines between film and theatre, as well as those between fiction and reality.
