After worldwide success with reinterpretations of great ballet classics such as ROMEO AND JULIET, CARMEN, SWAN LAKE, GISELLE and the celebrated piece THE SACRIFICE, which Dada Masilo last performed at Kampnagel in 2022, the South African choreographer and dancer returns to the Kampnagel stage this autumn with ten dancers and her own version of Shakespeare’s most eloquent drama, HAMLET. Thematically, the focus is on the deceptive appearance of what is said and terrible intrigues: for example, Prince Hamlet’s betrayal of Ophelia. Dada Masilo’s HAMLET is a theatrical performance with dance, song, violin and percussion. However, she has radically reduced the number of words, creating a contemporary, universally understandable piece from the weighty classic.
