Dafna Maimon

For her video ORIENT EXPRESS Finnish-Israeli artist Dafna Maimon uses a commercial from 1985 that her father used to promote his restaurant »Orient Express« – one of the first kebab restaurants in Finland. The advertisement showcases all of her family and is usedto explore her in-between origin. With a series of permutations of the narrative given by way of subtitles – sometimes corresponding with what is said in Finnish, sometimes faked – she mischievously plays on the delicate shapes and shadows of memory. This smallscale familiar game serves as a vehicle to present the yet to be resolved identity problems of Europe.
