Opening panel: Diversify the Code!

On the opening panel of the residency program THEHOST.IS, experts in art and digitality will give a first theoretical insight into the topic: they will discuss the necessity of accessibility and diversity of perspectives in code, how its democratization actually reaches everyone, what it has to do with de/colonization and queer feminism, and what it can do to art and code when they meet.

With Darsha Hewitt (media and sound artist), Tiara Roxanne (scholar, artist and cyberfeminist), R. Buse Çetin (researcher and consultant on AI policy and ethics) and Liat Grayver (media artist).

Darsha Hewitt is a Canadian media and sound artist based in Berlin. She is leading the first edition of the new residency program THEHOST.IS. Her interdisciplinary work evolves from material-based experiments with obsolete domestic technology and is also referred to as »Media Archeology«; she gets to the bottom of hidden systems in technology, tracing structures of economy, power and control and the ethical dimension of our ecological entanglements embedded in Western culture.

Tiara Roxanne is an Indigenous Mestiza cyberfeminist, scholar and artist based in Berlin, she is also a Postdoctoral Fellow at Data & Society. In her research and artistic practice, she explores the encounter between indigeneity and AI by questioning colonial structures embedded in machine learning systems. She works as a performance artist and practitioner between the digital and the material using textiles.

R. Buse Çetin is a researcher and consultant on AI policy and ethics, focusing on the impact and governance of AI systems. She combines personal experience with her interest in postcolonial studies, intersectional feminism, and science and technology studies (STS) to develop critical thinking about AI technologies and the narratives surrounding them. R. Buse Çetin is co-founder and research director of the AI research, advocacy, and arts platform Dreaming Beyond AI.

Liat Grayver is an Israeli media artist and painter with Iraqi origin. She has been living in Berlin since 2014 and works on approaches to integrate robotic and computer-based languages into the processes of painting and creative image-making. In 2022, she co-founded the group EACVA – Embodied Agents in Contemporary Visual Art, a multidisciplinary collaboration of artists, philosophers, psychologists, and computer/robotic engineers investigating how robotics in the visual arts influences issues of creativity, authorship, and agency.
