Between 1905 and 1907, in the then colony of German East Africa, members of various population groups fought in the Maji Maji War against German tyranny, united by their belief in the power of »maji« (water). The prophecy of the Maji Maji cult proclaimed that German bullets would be turned into water – until today, every schoolchild in Tanzania knows this story. The Maji Maji War is celebrated there as a milestone on the path to independence, while in Germany it is almost unknown. MAJI MAJI FLAVA by the Tanzanian-German team Flinn Works and Asedeva is a performance that is part historical document and part biting commentary on the neocolonial power relations that continue to prevail: multiperspectival, confrontational, and always with a sense of self-irony.

Triggerwarning: Historical texts are used in the form of quotes from the colonial era by Wissmann, Carl Peters and Graf von Götzen (e.g. N-word) that reproduce racism.
