Javanese Gamelan moved in the course of history, also through the influence of Islam as well as Holland, to the royal courts and was often played inside. Some, partly very old ensembles are still found today at the courts (Kraton) of Yogyakarta and Surakarta in central Java. Each Gamelan orchestra has its own tuning and character. All instruments are equal but have different functions in the ensemble: The drums set rhythm, tempo and dynamics, the gongs set intervals and punctuations, the metallophones in the middle of the stage lead the melody, the instruments in the foreground embellish it following complex rules. A composition is played in numerous variations in different tempos. The General Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Hamburg is hosting for a long time the experienced Gamelan group Margi Budoyo, which has appeared on many occasions, as well as in this year's opening concert of klub katarakt. Sekar Budaya is a second ensemble at the consulate which consists of younger musicians and students from Hamburg.
