Lessing’s drama NATHAN THE WISE serves as a plea for tolerance and humanity in an era of enlightenment. Up until today, it has been interpreted as an example of lived tolerance. The drama takes place during the crusades, addresses the relationship between the three major monotheistic religions and includes the Moslem Sultan Saladin as a historic figure. NATHAN THE WISE offers material for relevant discussion even in the 21st century. No wonder that the discourse specialists associated with Gintersdorfer/ Klaßen do an alternative reading of Lessing’s text – with pleasure, and with a guarantee of not adhering to the text. This includes sharp-witted speculations, danced analysis and musical augmentations.
