Delay the Sadness
In March, choreographer Sharon Eyal will make her debut at Kampnagel with her latest work, DELAY THE SADNESS. After spending an important period of her career with the Batsheva Dance Company, Eyal works with leading dance institutions and companies around the world, including the Berlin State Ballet, the NDT and the Paris Opera Ballet. With her own company, S-E-D, she is one of the most influential choreographers in the international dance world. Her works create a new vocabulary for ballet, building on the innovative spirit of William Forsythe and George Balanchine. She has developed her own distinctive, highly precise movement language.
What happens when dance emerges as an expression of loss? Eyal explores how grief, love and memory can be transformed into movement, and how these emotions can express a sense of life, continuity and vitality.
Performed by eight dancers, the choreography is an intense exploration of grief, love, memory, transformation, and the quest to express emotions that are almost impossible to put into words.
Sharon Eyal’s ecstatic yet precise movement language, accompanied by electronic music composed by Josef Laimon, moves between control and dissolution, vulnerability and the interplay of individual experience and collective energy.
DELAY THE SADNESS invites us to pause and consciously experience sadness without repressing it. In a world that is often characterised by haste and repression, this work creates a space for experiencing things that resists forgetting, and serves as an invitation to allow our emotions to have their own time and space.
