In her brittle visionary projects, Inga Copeland (formerly of Hype Williams) conjures up the ghosts of forgotten pop avant-gardists.
Inga Copeland founded the attentiongetting meta-pop duo Hype Williams with her former partner, Dean Blunt. The duo – which disclosed almost nothing about itself to the public – combined afro-futurism, lo-fi noise and bass to create something new. Inga Copeland is also a pseudonym, inspired by the author Douglas Coupland. After the couple split, Dean Blunt released a celebrated break-up album (which he also performed at Kampnagel). In 2014, the London-based Estonian-Russian artist Copeland crafted her own version of the future with her debut, Because I’m Worth It.» The first track on the album, «Faith OG X,» is a vibrating combination of ethereal synths, crackling sounds and two penetrating tones. «Advice to young girls,» produced by the admired British musician Actress, is an alienlike dance-track and ironic commentary on the dictaticism of Beyoncé-style pop-feminism. In «L’Oreal,» which also refers the album’s title to, the ghosts of the old pop avant-garde emerge from disintegrating beats. Inga Copeland distills dissolution to create the music of the future. Support comes from our favorite surreal lo-fi escapist Tellavision, who opens up with hybrid art-pop.
