Contemporary dance has not been a defining feature of Los Angeles, this city of film, art, and music. That is now changing thanks to 34-year-old Jacob Jonas, who began as a skateboarder and street performer, founded his own company, together with Jill Wilson, at age 21, and has since choreographed dance for a global audience through works for superstars ranging from Rosalía to SZA and Elton John. With a world premiere, he is now presenting a stage work in Europe for the first time: KEEPING SCORE is a trilogy of three major dance works in which Jonas processes his childhood, his battle with cancer, and his recovery. For this, he collaborated with, among others, Oscar winner (“Birdman”) Antonio Sánchez, whose live drum score shapes the first part, PRODUCT OF DIVORCE, which addresses the childhood trauma of a child of divorce. The second part, NATURE SOUNDS WHILE THE IV DRIPS, depicts the physical battle against cancer, while the third part, RESTART, reflects on healing and a new beginning. The trilogy reflects Jacob Jonas interdisciplinary approach, which also includes installations and films and offers a unique experience of emotional depth through a hyper-intense physical dance language ranging from breaking to ballet jumps.
