In the third part of his trilogy on the influence of the West on South Korean society, Jaha Koo cleverly and humorously weaves his own biography with social analysis.

In LOLLING & ROLLING and CUCKOO, which was presented at the 2018 Summer Festival, the South Korean artist Jaha Koo combined intelligent social analysis with his own personal experiences to create humorous, profound works. The third part of his Hamartia trilogy, dealing with the influence of Western ideologies on South Korean society, was supposed to have its world premiere at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels this May and would currently be touring Europe before coming to the Summer Festival. Due to the restrictions for cultural institutions worldwide, Jaha Koo will now premiere his new work in Hamburg. THE HISTORY OF KOREAN WESTERN THEATRE deals with Korean theatre: what is considered to be Korean theatre today is largely determined by the Western canon - from Shakespeare to Brecht. Against the backdrop of the loss of local traditions, Jaha Koo describes the small cracks in modern Confucianism - which still determines the moral system, way of life and social relations between the generations in South Korea - and looks to a new, more confident future.
