European Premiere in cooperation with Tanz im August Berlin

A seminal cultural-history masterpiece: The legendary American choreographer Lucinda Childs creates a new version of her avant-garde classic.

AVAILABLE LIGHT was the first and only collaboration between three pioneers in the worlds of music, dance and architecture: John Adams, a key figure in the realm of minimal music; Lucinda Childs, whose choreographies were inspired by art and music (and were performed at the Judson Memorial Church and in Wilson/Glass’ EINSTEIN AT THE BEACH, among others), and Frank O. Gehry, symbol of a new formal language in architecture, created this work for the opening of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1983. Gehry designed a simple and brilliant set with two levels that expanded on the museum’s industrial architecture. With his Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Gehry later became one of the foremost creators of »signature architecture.« The revamped version of AVAILABLE LIGHT, with a new set and new costumes, will premiere at the Disney Concert Hall before coming directly to the Summerfestival. For the piece, Lucinda Childs created a choreography that plays out on Gehry’s two-story set and complements Adams’ subtle half-electronic music made up of shifting patterns and instrumental textures. Motifs are revealed on one level – and repeated, twisted and changed on the other. As a result, the geometrically rigorous movements of the 11 dancers become an endless river of floating lightness.
