John Cage: 103 & One
Festival Day 1

klub katarakt presents at its opening for the first time an orchestral concert: the first Hamburg performance of 103 for large orchestra by John Cage with the simultaneous projection of his film One11. »A dream is coming true to us«, say the festival directors. One11 is a »film without subject«, showing a subtle interplay of light and shadow in an empty space. In 103, the orchestra plays without conductor following a stopwatch, each musician deciding individually how to shape his or her (given) part. The piece thus breaks with conventional orchestra traditions and demands alert, independent performers. A 90-minute ocean of constantly changing sounds and images: a special experience for the audience as well as for the musicians!
Hamburg duo C will perform at the opening party. Nika Son and F#X are composing musical sculptures and collages and invent structures and spaces which can calm and disturb at the same time.
