The history of Kampnagel from factory underdog to state theatre is an ongoing chapter in German and European cultural history. It crystallises how theatre culture has changed in terms of performance forms, political concerns, institutional action and internationality. The recently published book ‘40 Years of Contradiction’ describes, evaluates and questions the history, present and future of the theatre as well as its performance and production practice. In five workbooks that follow its thematic focal points, Kampnagel presents itself as the centre of intervening thought and action: solidary, sustainable, avant-garde.
Director and editor Amelie Deuflhard and Harald Müller enter into conversation with the authors Mable Preach & Uli Waller, explore contradictions in theatre and publishing practice and read pithy passages from the book.
