Via headphones, LIGNA guides the audience through the vacant Kaufhof store downtown: an audio walk performance about the building's eventful past and the future of the city center.

The Hamburg-based media and performance art collective LIGNA explores the possibilities of agency of dispersed or temporarily associating collectives in performances for the stage and urban space. With the audience in motion, clever reflections emerge that combine social criticism with well-informed references from film, literature and art, for instance, but often dissolve them in surprisingly sensual moments. Under the title DIE GESPENSTER DES KONSUMISMUS, LIGNA invites you to a performative audio walk into the hidden abysses beneath the shiny pavement of the city center at this year's festival edition. In the basement of the former Kaufhof, the gates to an underworld open up: Hamburg's urban history with the ravages of cholera, the demolition of the Gängeviertel and the expulsion of the impoverished population from the city center, as well as the construction of the Klöpperhaus - a wool trading house - by Fritz Höger is mirrored with the development of commodity trading and international real estate speculation. After the closure of the house in its previous form, which was accompanied by numerous urban discourses and labor fights, there is now the chance to think about a utopia beyond the commodity-shaped city. What spaces will Hamburg's inner city need in the future?
