Lukas Avendaño

Performer and anthropologist Lukas Avendaño grew up in a community of indigenous Zapotecs in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. In his performance, »No Soy Persona. No Soy Mariposa,« the word »butterfly« is examined in the full breadths of its meanings. In Mexico, it is closely tied to homosexuality, queer ways of life and the figure of the »hustler.« According to Avendaño, the term »mariposa« creates a border between »those of us who openly identify as butterflies« and those who do not. Lukas Avendaño becomes an exhibitionist, showing his body, the codes of desire – always sustained by the wish to ensnare his watchers and to turn them into accomplices, lovers and/or voyeurs of his games.
