In 2017 Marlene Monteiro Freitas scored a Summer Festival hit with a delirious, carnivalesque, ecstatic piece. Following-up this year is the premiere of the new piece by the style-defining choreographer.
In 2017 Marlene Monteiro Freitas' piece »Bacchae - Prelude to a Purge« had its German premiere at the Summer Festival - and rarely has a play had such a lasting effect. Through a lunatic, highly musical and strictly formal language, dance became a grotesque spectacle, which was subsequently shown worldwide and made Freitas one of the most renowned choreographers in Europe. In her new work for a large ensemble, the Cape Verdean-born artist now explores the evil (»mal«). In our cultures, evil is not only personified by the devil, witches or magicians, but is also often suspected in the animalistic, the violence of nature or the uncanny sexuality of women. Freitas' MAL -EMBRIAGUEZ DIVINA now places a choir at the centre of the work, under the influence of haunting visions, poisonous testimonies, bacterial infections and rotten facts. After the cancellation of the planned premiere at the Münchner Kammerspiele and subsequent performances at various major European festivals, it is now being rehearsed and premiered at Kampnagel.

This year the summer festival takes place under special circumstances. Therefore it is important that we observe security measures to protect everyone and collect the contact information of our guests. This works without complications, but only with your help:
· Everywhere: Keep a distance of 1.5m, except in self-chosen groups of max. 10 people;
· In all indoor areas: Wear mouth-nose-protection, except in fixed seating areas;
· In the festival garden and in the Peacetanbul Restaurant: please always register as soon as you take a seat. The registration is done analogue with pen and paper or digital via a QR CODE. More information on site.
