Belgian artist Miet Warlop makes visual art using the medium of theater. Her Disneyland-on-acid play MYSTERY MAGNET was one of the biggest hits at the 2013 edition of the Summer Festival, a visually naughty spectacle of color and forms, with foam sausages and human balls of wool. Her new work, FRUITS OF LABOR is a trippy crossover between a theater performance and a concert, extended with Miet Warlop’s visual artwork. She shares the stage with three musicians, a roadie, and objects that are brought to life. They transfer beats and songs onto objects, theater machinery and bodies, and at some point the entire stage (or world) becomes an instrument. This psychoactive parade of objects (with great songs and an operatic aria) is, despite its craziness, an artistic reaction to a world that has gone off the rails. But most of all is FRUITS OF LABOR a sparkling present to a world in which every form of sparkle is getting more and more controlled and restrainded. At its premiere at Brussels’ kunstenfestivaldesarts, FRUITS OF LABOR elicited euphoric applause.
