‘A musician should not make music, rather they should create moments of revelation.’ Canadian composer Claude Vivier was devoted to this high-flying motto and poured his heart and soul into it. And in practice his pieces, with their immediately plausible tone, seek out the same kind of people; lascivious sonorities and touching tenderness ensure emotional borderline experiences. Reason enough to dedicate time to Vivier at the Greatest Hits Festival. Two of his revolutionary pieces are under the spotlight on the opening day, one of which is the large scale symphonic poem, ‘Siddhartha’. Herman Hesse’s novel of the same name, about a young man searching for enlightenment, acts as a template for this piece. Matthias Pintscher leads the NDR symphony orchestra in the opening concert of the Greatest Hits Festival. Let there be light!
