Oona Doherty
Death of a Hunter (2018)
Battered, abandoned, almost sacred: Oona Doherty transforms a car into a body – and creates a monument to lost masculinity and old ghosts.
Oona Doherty is considered one of the fiercest voices in European dance. Her hyperintense works blend rage, vulnerability and political commentary, creating lasting images. Alongside her new piece Specky Clark and performances at Kunstmeile Hamburg, the Summer Festival presents Death of a Hunter – an atmospheric installation in the Kampnagel Vorhalle, in which Doherty, as usual, boldly turns to the dark side of existence.
Based on her highly acclaimed solo Hope Hunt and the Ascension into Lazarus (Summer Festival 2020), Death of a Hunter creates a haunting atmosphere of grief, violence, and spiritual healing. At its core: the shattered shell of a car, illuminated by sparse beams of light. Not just an object, but a body, symbolizing the exhausted, battered male figure from Hope Hunt.
Sound fragments from Belfast, sacred sounds and cinematic darkness shape a space that is more a state than an exhibition – a silent funeral for lost masculinity and a visceral reflection on dealing with violent heritage.
