The category of gender hardly plays a role in large parts of medical research and treatment. This is closely related to the gender images that were formed and solidified between the 18th and 19th centuries: »women« as a deviation from the »male norm«. Consequently, women have historically been pathologised per se, and at the same time treated worse. The discipline of »gender medicine« tries to get away from this androcentric view, i.e. focused on cis men, and to think of the category of gender as an important factor in health care. What role does gender play in medical care, and how do gender norms influence individual and societal approaches to our health? What images of »being a woman« and »being a man« are projected onto patients in medical contexts? How sensitive are medical professionals to trans*, inter and non-binary patients and their healthcare? And what harm do imprecise or simply faulty treatment methods do to people of all genders disadvantaged by patriarchy?
