Theater renewal group Rimini Protokoll is creating an app with a series of audio walks to transform the pandemic-proof ritual of walking into a theater piece, connecting people around the world.

With their impressive and well-researched documentary theater works, the Berlin-based group Rimini Protokoll has toured festivals and theaters worldwide and won numerous awards. At the International Summer Festival, their elaborate iPad production SITUATOON ROOMS in 2014 took audiences into the uncanny depths of weapon trade; with DO'S AND DON'TS in 2018, they took children seriously as experts on the city in a bus tour; and most recently, with UNCANNY VALLEY, they staged an electronic double of the author Thomas Melle at K1.

Their latest work THE WALKS is an app for ten 20-minute audio walks as short audio plays for specific locations in Hamburg - which can be experienced simultaneously by people in other cities around the world at similar locations. Through the basic human act of walking together, people around the globe are connected in THE WALKS. And the ritual of walking as social interaction, which has become so central in the pandemic, becomes a theatrical scenario, offset with narratives, dialogical situations or choreographic explorations.

Info for using the app:

»The Walks« is an app for smartphones that can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. To start the Walks, users receive an activation code when they buy their ticket at our box office for 2.99 euros, which then can be redeemed in the app. This unlocks a series of audio walks in the app for unlimited use. Purchasing the audio walks via our ticket shop is cheaper than in the app itself, but a purchase is also possible there. In order for the app to run smoothly, a current operating system should be installed (5 or later for Android or 13 or later for iOS). A storage volume of 100 MB is required on the device to install the app. »The Walks« is an invitation to walk, with varying pace and intensity. More detailed information about each walk is available in the app.
