Modern bass music has its origins in Jamaican dub and British rave culture – transculturality in sound form. In the third evening of the IN/AUDIBLE SOUNDS series (see below), Okmalumkoolkat and Robot Koch converse about the roots and future of bass and present the innovative potential of deep pitches.
Okmalumkoolkat is the pseudonym of South African music producer and hip-hop artist Smiso Zwane. He raps in Zulu, Afrikaans and English over futuristic beats influenced by bass and South African mgqashiyo. He has produced several pieces of music with British musicians LV for Hyperdub, the pioneering London music label, on Infine he collaborates with the beat architects Cid Rim & The Clonious. Robot Koch, meanwhile, commutes between Berlin and Los Angeles, and is the German figurehead for an international producer scene focusing on the continued development of abstract beats. Robot Koch makes a cinematic form of post-dubstep electronica that is unafraid of beauty. When he’s not releasing his own music (e.g. on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown label), he works as a producer and remixer for countless artists, like Casper and Marteria.
